Rockstar Games just pulled back the curtain a little further. On August 27, 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET, then dropped on the official Rockstar YouTube channel and the GTA VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day. If you have been waiting for more than the 2023 trailer, this is the footage you wanted.

The extended look runs about 26 minutes and is captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. That matters. This is not a cinematic trailer with tricks. What you see is what the game engine is actually putting on screen, and it looks a full generation ahead of GTA V.

Return to Vice City, now in Leonida

The game returns to Vice City, Rockstar's neon-soaked take on Miami, and this time the whole state is called Leonida (the studio's version of Florida). The footage shows a larger, denser, more alive world than anything in the series before it. Beaches, swamps, strip malls, downtown canyons, and small-town backroads all show up in the same continuous space, and the camera moves through them without a single loading seam.

This is the first GTA built for a modern console from the ground up, and it shows in the density. Crowds react, weather moves across the map, and the lighting shifts from golden-hour swamp to neon night in a way the older games only faked with fixed palettes.

Jason and Lucia

The two leads are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The extended look spends real time on both of them, showing how their stories weave together. Rockstar has been clear that this entry is built around a pair of protagonists, and the footage leans into that partnership rather than hiding it. Lucia opens the story out of a correctional facility, and Jason is the counterpart she pulls into the life. The Bonnie and Clyde framing from the trailers is not a costume, it is the spine of the campaign.

What actually looks new

A few things stand out from the gameplay slice:

  • The world reacts. NPCs, traffic, and interiors look like they keep living even when the camera is not on them, which is the hardest thing to fake in an open-world game.
  • Driving and movement look heavier and more grounded than GTA V, closer to Red Dead Redemption 2's weight but tuned for a city. Cars deform, lean, and lose grip in ways the arcade model never attempted.
  • Map customization is in. You can recolor map icons across six color options, a small but telling sign that Rockstar is letting players shape the UI to taste instead of forcing one layout.
  • The presentation calls it the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series. Based on the footage, that is not just marketing, it is visible in the frame.

Why this reveal matters

The 2023 trailer proved the game existed and looked gorgeous. This extended look proves the systems work. For a series where the gap between trailer and launch has historically been long, seeing 26 minutes of real in-engine play this far ahead of a November ship date is a strong signal that Rockstar is confident in the build and not scrambling to finish.

It also tells us what the studio is choosing to show on purpose. By leading with two protagonists, a real Florida, and grounded driving, Rockstar is signaling that GTA VI is a character and world game first, not a tech demo.
