With GTA 6 arriving on November 19, 2026, the biggest game launch in years is also a gift to scammers. Every big release brings fake giveaways, cheap "keys" and phishing messages that borrow Rockstar's branding.

None of this is unique to GTA 6, but the scale of the hype makes the traps more convincing. This guide covers the seven most common ones and how to avoid each. Nothing here is a leak or a rumor: it is practical advice built around what Rockstar has actually confirmed.

1. Know the real price before you shop

The confirmed prices are $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. The pre-order bonus is the Vintage Vice City Pack.

If a seller offers the game at 50 percent off a month before launch, that is not a deal. It is a warning. Our price breakdown lists what each edition includes, so you can compare any offer against the real thing.

2. Buy only from the platform stores

GTA 6 is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The safe places to buy are the PlayStation Store, the Xbox store and established retailers for physical copies.

If a link arrives through a text, a direct message or a comment section, do not click it. Type the store address yourself or use the console's built-in store app. Our guide on where to pre-order lists the legitimate options.

3. Treat "early access" and "beta key" offers as fake

Rockstar has not announced any public beta, early access program or key giveaway. Anyone offering you one is lying.

These scams usually ask you to "verify" your account by entering your login on a lookalike page. Once you do, the account is gone. Real announcements come through Rockstar Newswire, not through a stranger's inbox.

No PC version has been announced. We covered that silence in our PC release date piece.

That makes any "GTA 6 PC download" a guaranteed fake. These files are commonly bundled with malware, stealing saved browser passwords and payment details. If it is not announced, it is not real, and a download button does not change that.

5. Be careful with third-party key sites

Console games do not work like PC key sales, and grey-market code resellers are a known source of region-locked, refunded or stolen codes. Savings of a few dollars are not worth losing the game on launch day.

If you want to save money, wait for official retailer promotions and gift card offers from the platform holders themselves. Do not buy digital codes from random marketplace sellers.

6. Ignore scalper pricing on collectibles

Special editions and accessories sell out fast, and resellers know it. We already saw this with the sold-out DualSense controller and the $400 collector's box with no game.

Before paying a markup, check whether the official store restocks. Prices tend to fall back once the first rush passes. Panic buying is exactly what a scalper is counting on.

7. Lock down your accounts now

The simplest protection is boring. Turn on two-step verification for your PlayStation, Xbox and Rockstar accounts. Use a unique password for each. Check which payment cards are saved.

Do this before the preload window opens, because that is when millions of people will be logging in at once, and phishing messages will be at their peak. Also learn the basics in our guide to spotting fake leaks, since the same tricks show up in scam posts.

The quick checklist

Before you pay for anything GTA 6 related, ask yourself four questions:

  • Is the seller the official store or a known retailer?
  • Does the price match $79.99 or $99.99?
  • Is the offer for a feature Rockstar has actually announced?
  • Am I being rushed?

If any answer is wrong, stop. A real pre-order will still be there in ten minutes, and a scam usually will not survive a quick search.

What to do if you get caught

Contact your bank or card provider straight away and dispute the charge. Change the password on any account you entered on the fake page, and report the page to the platform. Acting within hours matters far more than acting perfectly.

Launch day is just over a month away. Stay patient, buy from official sources only, and you will be playing Vice City while everyone else is chasing refunds.
